Primary Prevention

Sexual violence is a serious public health problem in the United States, affecting people of every age and background.   Many people regard sexual violence to be a true epidemic.   But with primary prevention, we can stop sexual violence before it begins.

OASIS began its Sexual Violence Primary Prevention Program in 2007.  Primary Prevention means taking action before violence occurs.  It involves promoting healthy environments, healthy behaviors and respect.   Primary Prevention builds knowledge and skills and seeks to change attitudes and behaviors that support violence.  Our programs address the underlying issues that support and perpetuate sexual violence.  We teach others to look critically at media messages, challenge gender role stereotypes, and step-in when peers are promoting violence and disrespect.

Through education and community mobilization, we hope to create safe, just, equitable communities where women and men, girls and boys, may have violence-free lives.
